Event Description

Game Changers in Global Health: A four-part lunchtime seminar series

The last fifteen years have defined global health in profound and exciting ways. Dramatic increases in funding, the creation of new local/global entities, and the engagement of citizens and the private sector have all played a role in shaping global health as we know it today.

The Global Health Program will be hosting its first Game Changers lunchtime seminar series this spring. Our Departmental Guest, Dr. Anu Gupta will set the stage and interview guest speakers on three game changers in global health.

Session 3: "Bono & Bank of America: How Social Media Engaged Everyone in Global Health"

Anu Gupta, MD & Zack Langway, MA

The birth of social media was pivotal in turning abstract global health concepts into real people.  It engaged millions of people to "click" and buy, donate, sign, or share.  In this session, we will touch upon American Idol, the ONE Campaign, (RED), the Social Good Summit, MDG1000, Nothing But Nets, Girl Up, Global Mom Relay, Shot@Life, and the Super Bowl.  We will be joined by Zack Langway for an interview-style discussion of his work on behalf of the United Nations Foundation.

Zack Langway is a Vice President at Fenton and a senior member of Fenton’s global development team. He joined Fenton in 2014, having spent the previous five years providing counsel to nonprofits, foundations and companies focused on political advocacy and international development.

Zack’s work passion has long been at the intersection of digital strategy, political advocacy and international development. At Fenton, Zack leads digital accounts in the global health and development space. During his career, Zack has provided strategic guidance to a number of national and international organizations, including the United Nations Foundation, Johnson & Johnson and Bread for the World.

Before joining Fenton, Zack directed online organizing and national campaigns for the Center for Community Change. In this role, he empowered low-income communities of color to tell their stories and retake their power to create and lasting change in their communities. Zack also managed online advocacy for the United Nations Foundation, helping to establish the first Social Good Summit and leading a task force, which provided sweeping recommendations for centralizing social and digital capacity within the UN Department of Public Information.

Zack holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Brown University and a Master of Arts in Communication from Johns Hopkins University.

Lunch will be served.
